Local author’s book on kindness and acceptance hits shelves at Town House Books
Life has come full circle for first-time author Robert A. Mackey with the publication of his debut children’s book, “Gaeleek, Mender of Hearts.” The former St. Charles resident is delighted to announce that Town House Books, a premiere independent bookseller, located at 105 N. Second Ave. in downtown St. Charles, is featuring his book.
“Town House Books is an iconic landmark in St. Charles. Our family holds many special memories browsing and buying books and dining in its outstanding café. Having my book on the shelves of Town House Books is like coming home,” Mackey said.
“Gaeleek, Mender of Hearts” is a story which invites readers to witness the power of kindness, friendship, and acceptance through the eyes of a lovable dog named Gaeleek. It begins in a familiar dog park setting where a group of playful dogs is suddenly confronted with something new. A small dog named Bootsie arrives, excited to join the pack, but the other dogs question whether she can keep up with their games. Her size and energy seem to set her apart, and they hesitate to let her in. It’s a scenario that mirrors real-life situations for many children, whether they’re stepping into a new classroom, playground, or group of friends.
But everything changes when Gaeleek, a gentle and wise soft-coated Wheaton terrier, steps in. Gaeleek sees something special in Bootsie that the others have missed. Through her patience and kindness, she helps the group realize that taking a chance on someone new can lead to new friendships, greater confidence, and a stronger community. This simple yet moving lesson in acceptance strikes a chord, reminding readers both young and old, that differences should be embraced.
Mackey pens a story where children can enjoy the antics of a playful cast of canine characters and absorb valuable lessons about risk-taking, growing confidence, and being open to new friendships.
“I believe that kindness is at the heart of all meaningful relationships,” says Mackey, reflecting on the themes of his book. “Through Gaeleek’s story, I wanted to show children that being kind and welcoming isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. When we extend kindness to others, we create spaces where everyone can grow and thrive.”
As readers follow Gaeleek’s journey, they encounter more than just a story about dogs. They are invited to reflect on their own friendship experiences and consider how small acts of kindness can ripple through their lives and communities. Whether a child is starting at a new school or entering a new group of friends, “Gaeleek, Mender of Hearts,” offers a gentle, reassuring voice that says, “You are welcome here.”
Mackey’s writing is engaging and accessible, making the book ideal for young readers, parents, teachers, and anyone looking for a story with an important message. The book’s illustrations, done by watercolorist Barbara Badolato, are playful yet thoughtful, and will capture children’s attention.
Mackey’s hope is that “Gaeleek, Mender of Hearts” will be the first in a series featuring this lovable canine with a message, and will become a favorite in homes, classrooms, and libraries nationwide.
