‘Big the Musical’ in Buffalo Grove is a real family affair

Big Deal Productions, a program of the Buffalo Grove Park District, will present “Big The Musical,” running July 18-27 at the Buffalo Grove Community Arts Center. Based on the beloved 1988 film “Big” starring Tom Hanks, this production not only showcases local talent but also features a unique cast connection: eight different families working together on the show, including a family of four performing together on stage.

The Laska family — parents Mark and Jessica, along with their children Liam and Bridget — are bringing their love for the arts to life in this lively and nostalgia-filled show. Whether sharing scenes, songs or backstage laughs, this family affair adds a special spark to the production.

“Sharing the stage with my kids and my husband as he makes his stage debut was something I never would have predicted I would get to do (maybe Zoltar did!),” Jessica said. “It’s been so fun to spend our summer doing this together! The whole experience has created some amazing memories that we will never forget!”

In addition to the Laska family, the production also includes five families with both a parent and child involved, as well as two engaged couples.

Choreographer Cathy Jacobson, whose daughter Molly is performing in the show, said, “Sharing theater with my daughter — her on stage and myself behind the scenes — is a beautiful reminder that theater isn’t just about performance; it’s about connection, family and legacy.”

Directed by Tommy Novak, “Big the Musical” is a lighthearted musical comedy that promises to delight audiences of all ages. With showstopping dance numbers, vibrant sets, and a real, light-up piano on stage, this production is a family-friendly chance to support the arts and local talent, and witness families making theater magic together.

Tickets are $20 for ages 13-61, and $15 per child ages 12 and younger and seniors 62 and older. Tickets are available for purchase at bigdealproductions.org or at the Alcott Center, located at 530 Bernard Drive in Buffalo Grove, during regular business hours.

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on July 18, 19 and 25; and at 3 p.m. July 20, 26 and 27, at the Community Arts Center, at 225 McHenry Road in Buffalo Grove.
