Why the separations?

I read Joan Davis's posting in the July 4 Daily Herald. Since we have not heard from Trump or his staff the reasoning behind deporting mothers, fathers, husbands and/or wives, one cannot pass judgment until we hear the reasoning behind it other than them suspected of being here illegally. I wish Trump or Noem would enlighten us as to the reasoning for separating family members and especially parents from their children.
