Colorado teen admits to robbing Downers Grove woman at gunpoint
A Colorado teen has been sentenced to an indefinite term in juvenile detention after pleading guilty Monday to robbing a Downers Grove woman at gunpoint.
The 17-year-old boy, whose last known address is in Denver, could be detained until his 21st birthday under a deal in which he admitted guilt to a charge of armed robbery with a firearm, according to the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.
Authorities say the boy was one of four individuals who approached the woman at about 8:37 p.m. April 22, as she walked in the 4900 block of Forest Avenue, near Downers Grove’s downtown.
He displayed a handgun in his waistband and shouted “money, money” at the woman while another of the individuals pulled at her purse, authorities said. After the woman gave the juvenile approximately $110, the group fled the scene, according to prosecutors.
The investigation led to the juvenile, who was found living in Colorado but is a migrant from Venezuela. He waived extradition and was brought back to DuPage County on May 16 to face charges.
“The identification of the juvenile in this case, and his subsequent extradition from Colorado, demonstrates the lengths we will go to hold anyone who commits a crime in DuPage County accountable for their actions,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in an announcement of Monday’s plea agreement. “We have absolutely zero tolerance for armed violence, as we saw in this case, and I commend the Downers Grove Police Department for their truly outstanding work, which included traveling to Colorado, that allowed us to hold this juvenile responsible for his actions.”
