Feeling fish’s pain
I live in St. Charles and love to fish in the Fox River, one of the better smallmouth bass rivers in the Midwest. On June 26, a letter appeared from some guy criticizing Steve Sarley’s column about encouraging kids to enjoy fishing. I had to laugh. The author was bemoaning how painful it is for fish to be caught and then released. Not sure how he knows that, but maybe he asks the fish. Yesterday I caught a nice, healthy 14-inch Smallie that had another fisherman’s lure stuck in his mouth. I removed my lure and the other one, making the fish really happy (I know because he told me when I released him.).There is one thing that’s likely even more uncomfortable for the fish when it’s caught: that would be eating it.
