Driver ticketed after truck hauling garbage tips over in Des Plaines

A section of Golf Road in Des Plaines was shut down for about seven hours Wednesday after a semitrailer truck hauling garbage tipped over.

The accident occurred about 5:30 a.m. at Seegers Road. The driver lost control as the truck headed west through a curve, police said.

The truck veered into an inside lane, hit the median and fell over onto its driver’s side, police said.

The truck reportedly was carrying a 77,000-pound load, but police didn’t know how much trash spilled onto the roadway.

The normally busy road was closed to traffic between South Mount Prospect and Seegers roads until the wreck and garbage were removed.

The driver, 58-year-old Gulibaldo Carrera of Melrose Park, freed himself from the rig and refused medical treatment, Des Plaines Fire Chief Matt Matzl said.

Carrera was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said.
