Waukegan Park District Celebrates Park and Recreation Month

The Waukegan Park District is celebrating Park and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association, to highlight the impact of parks and recreation in the community. From Free Movies in the Park to the Community Yard Sale, free programs and events will give individuals and families fun opportunities to enjoy their local parks.

Since 1985, the United States has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. Created by the NRPA, Park and Recreation Month specifically highlights the essential and powerful role that local park and recreation agencies and their professionals play in building stronger, more vibrant, and resilient communities across the country. This year's theme is “Build Together, Play Together,” celebrating the contributions of full-time park and recreation professionals, along with part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers, who maintain the country’s close-to-home parks.

“The community is invited to celebrate Park and Recreation Month at their local parks. This month,” George Bridges Jr., President of the Waukegan Park District Board of Commissioners, said. “The Waukegan Park District is showcasing how parks and recreation opportunities enrich the lives of individuals in the community. Local parks are so much more than just outdoor spaces; they are hubs where children and adults can be active, learn, and explore.”

“The Waukegan Park District is celebrating Park and Recreation Month with free programs and events at various parks throughout the month,” Jay Lerner, Executive Director of the Waukegan Park District, said. “Parks are welcoming spaces that play a vital role in enhancing the health and well-being of the community. From Adelphi Park to Yeoman Park, I encourage individuals and families to spend time outdoors and discover a new park.”

The National Recreation and Park Association and Waukegan Park District encourage individuals to share why their local park and recreation professionals are important to them on social media with #BuildTogetherPlayTogether.
