1973 act gives president authority he needs

I read the editorial in today’s Daily Herald, regarding the role of Congress regarding their constitutional duty on declaring war. The editorial essentially echoed the comments of the Democratic congressional representatives and senators stating that the president was exceeding his authority.

I understand that the Democrats were just continuing their policies of resisting the current administration policies. However, the Daily Herald has a journalistic responsibility to present the facts, even on the editorial page. The editorial page allows you the freedom to present your opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.

My wise adult son posted on Facebook that the Democrats criticizing the President’s actions, are either ignoring, or ignorant of, The War Powers Resolution of 1973, which Congress passed, that states the president, as Commander in Chief, under Article II, Section 2, can take military action without prior approval to repel sudden attacks or respond to imminent threats.

He went on to point out that every modern president, Democrat and Republican, has exercised this power, including Obama, Clinton, Bush, Reagan and Biden. In a subsequent post, he suggested that Congress should be tested on their knowledge before being sworn in. I would suggest that the same test be required of the Daily Herald editorial staff.
