Geneva to start replacing underground electrical cables in 4 areas

Geneva is replacing underground electrical cables in four areas starting in July.

The city says it will improve the reliability of electrical service.

The work will be done July 7 to Aug. 18 on South Harrison Street near Spring Street; Aug. 18 to Sept. 8 on James Street west of Ninth Street; Sept. 9-26 in the 2000 block of South Batavia Avenue; and Sept. 27 to Oct. 29 on James Street from Third to Fifth streets.

Landscaping will be restored after construction is finished.

The contractor, Utility Dynamics, will install conduits through utility easements and public rights of way. It will use directional boring to do so.

Electrical transformers, pedestals and streetlights will also be replaced.

The city will send notices of service disruptions when the contractor has to energize the new equipment and connect homes to it.

Obstructions within 10 feet of a switch, junction box, transformer, or pedestal will be removed, except for established viable trees.

Plantings within 5 feet of streetlights need to be relocated. Residents are encouraged to move those plantings before the contractor's arrival.

The city website has a project map. For more information, contact Jennifer Hilkemann, who oversees electrical distribution, construction and maintenance, at (630) 232-1503 or emai jhilkemann@geneva.il.us.
