Itasca reopens renovated bird sanctuary, sports complex after $2M transformation
The Itasca Park District, village of Itasca, and DuPage County will host the grand reopening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Ray Franzen Bird Sanctuary and Softball Complex, along with the unveiling of the new pedestrian access bridge over Springbrook Creek. The celebration will take place at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at the newly revitalized site, 650 N. Rohlwing Road.
This event marks the completion of a $2 million transformation that strengthens community access to recreation and nature. In addition to the new features, access to the Barking Lot dog park will also reopen on the same day after the ceremony, welcoming pets and their owners back to one of Itasca’s favorite destinations.
Guests are invited to tour the upgraded sanctuary, walk the new trails and bridge, view the site’s new amenities, and cheer on the first baseball game held on the renovated fields.
Project highlights include:
• A new pedestrian pathway and bridge — the first and only crossing pedestrian crossing over Springbrook Creek connecting downtown Itasca to the park amenities off Rohlwing Road;
• Restored boardwalk connections through the Ray Franzen Bird Sanctuary;
• A scenic nature outlook, fitness stations, interpretive signage, and field irrigation;
• Major renovations to the 38-year-old softball complex and new parking lot.
The village of Itasca contributed $500,000 toward the pedestrian pathway connection. The project also received a $600,000 OSLAD grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Additional support came from the Spring Lake Business Association and Gift of Hope, who provided key land easements and partnership.
“This project wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration between the Itasca Park District, billage of Itasca, DuPage County and community partners,” said Maryfran Leno, executive director of the Itasca Park District. “We’re excited to reopen this beautifully renewed space and upgraded amenities for the community to enjoy.”
Mayor Jeff Pruyn added, “We saw an opportunity to connect this space with the rest of the village and create something that reflects our long-standing commitment to access, safety, and quality of life. The new bridge and upgraded facilities bring lasting value to families, athletes, and everyone who enjoys the outdoors.”
