Gun control doesn’t work
The Sunday, June 1, paper included a Daily Herald opinion piece about a new safe storage law. When are gun control extremists going to understand that gun control doesn’t work? Criminals are criminals, because they don’t obey the law so creating more laws for them to disobey isn’t going to help. The very few people with a mental health issue and who may be violent aren’t going to worry about laws, either.
How are they going to enforce this law? Are police going to go door to door and search houses? Also, let’s be realistic, most teenagers are going to figure out how to open a gun safe. Also, responsible parents are going to do this already when needed and irresponsible parents won’t. Responsible parents who own guns will make sure their children will have age-appropriate training on how to handle guns. I had training on gun safety in middle school and that was where it was taught.
I don’t believe the statement that guns are the No. 1 cause of children deaths. If it is the study I think it is, the study included 18- and 19-year-olds, which are not children. How many children gun deaths are due to gang violence? One data source says over 80%. I’m sure that the next percentage is suicide, but there are multiple means to commit that act.
There have been instances when children have used a gun for their family’s safety or their own. Per a CDC study, there were 60,000 to 2.5 million cases where a gun was used in self-defense and in over 90% of these cases, the gun just had to be displayed.
We should not have to give up our constitutional rights for a false claim of increase safety.
