Cougars’ rally falls short against Canaries
Sioux Falls beat the Kane County Cougars 10-6 on Sunday at Northwestern Medicine Field in Geneva.
The Canaries scored seven runs in the second inning against Cougars right-hander Chirs Mazza. The inning saw three home runs, including back-to-back shots by Peter Zimmerman and Jordan Barth. After back-to-back singles by Trevor Achenbach and Scott Combs, the Canaries added to their lead with a sacrifice fly by Hunter Clanin to make the score 4-1. After Mike Hart walked, Calvin Estrada hit a 3-run homer, pushing the Canaries’ lead to 7-1.
In the bottom of the second, the Cougars pulled within 7-2 on a bases-loaded walk by Marcus Chiu. Oscar Santos’ second sacrifice fly of the game made the score 7-3. The Cougars struck again in the fourth inning after Santos ripped a single back up the middle. Armond Upshaw launched a ball off the right field wall, sending Santos all the way around to score, and narrowing the deficit to 7-4.
The next inning, the Cougars’ CJ Valdez and Galli Cribbs Jr. were on base when Trendon Craig smashed a two-run double, cutting the Canaries’ lead to 7-6.
Sioux Falls put the game out of reach with three runs in the ninth inning.
