BBB warns beware of tariff scams targeting consumers

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning consumers to stay vigilant as scammers exploit widespread confusion about tariffs and their impact on individuals and the marketplace.

Fraudsters are using emails, text messages, and social media ads to falsely claim that fees are due or that consumers can pay to receive tariff relief.

“These are scams,” said Steve Bernas, president and CEO of the Chicago BBB. “Legitimate tariff-related fees are the responsibility of the importing company — not the consumer.”

Scammers often impersonate government agencies or delivery services, using urgent language to pressure individuals into making payments or clicking malicious links.

“This is a new twist on the classic impostor phishing scam,” Bernas added.

Common scam tactics include:

• Fake package notifications: Claims that you owe a fee for a package you’ve received, ordered, or that is en route.

Tariff relief offers: Messages suggesting you’re eligible for reimbursement or relief from tariff-related fees.

Urgent payment demands: High-pressure tactics urging immediate payment to avoid penalties or secure discounts.

Impersonation of government agencies: Fraudulent websites and emails designed to mimic official sources.

BBB tips to protect yourself:

Watch for urgency: Scammers often demand immediate action — take a moment to verify.

Verify sources: Always consult official government websites for accurate information.

Avoid suspicious links: Don’t click on links in unsolicited messages.

Be cautious with payments: Never send money to strangers or use unusual payment methods.

“Think before you act,” Bernas emphasized. “Taking a moment to verify can save you from becoming a victim.”

If you encounter a scam — even if you didn’t lose money — report it to the BBB Scamtracker to help protect others in your community. Look for the BBB seal, The Sign of a Better Business. Visit https://www.bbb.org or follow us @ChicagoBBB on social media.
