Coroner: 12-year-old boy died of drowning in Willow Springs

A 12-year-old boy died Friday night from a drowning incident at Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs, authorities said.

The boy was pronounced dead at 8:21 p.m. at Northwestern Medicine Palos Hospital, according to a statement provided by a Forest Preserve District of Cook County spokesman.

The boy, identified by the Cook County coroner’s office as Asael Gonzalez-Guel, was retrieved from the water and unresponsive at Camp Bullfrog Lake at 7:43 p.m. by a dive team from the North Palos Fire Department and Water Rescue Team.

Witnesses indicated he and his 9-year-old brother were in the lake after one of them slipped in, according to the statement. Visitors fishing on the bank of the lake were able to pull the younger brother out of shallower water.

The Cook County coroner’s office determined that the cause of death was drowning and an accident.
