Celebrate Kane County Forest Preserve District’s centennial on June 8
Everyone’s invited to join the Forest Preserve District of Kane County for a Centennial Celebration on Sunday, June 8, at noon at Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve in Elburn.
Johnson’s Mound was the first preserve established by the district, and the perfect setting to mark 100 years of conservation, recreation, and education.
The event will begin with brief remarks from Forest Preserve leadership, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the unveiling of “Guardians,” the district’s first permanent public art installation, created by local sculptor Mike Baur.
After the formal program, attendees are invited to participate in a community tree planting as part of the Centennial Grove Project, which includes planting 500 native trees. Patrons can view trees planted in the Centennial Grove, the restored 23 acres of prairie, and expanded trails — including a new ADA-accessible spur and a council ring.
Guests can also enjoy:
• Food trucks with refreshments available for purchase from Fernando’s Street Kitchen, Spoon Burger, and Foxy’s Ice Cream
• Live music by singer-songwriter Andrew Camp
• Guided hikes by district naturalists through the preserve and project area
• Educational pollinator station and vendor tables
• Guests may also receive a free commemorative coin (while supplies last)
This family-friendly celebration offers something for everyone. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather. The event will go on rain or shine, however, thunderstorms would cancel it. Please keep an eye on district social media for the latest updates.
Additionally, bring chairs or picnic blankets to listen to music after the tree planting, as seating will be limited.
