Two different messages for Memorial Day

I fear the Daily Herald may soon incur the wrath of the Trump administration, with your Tuesday, May 27, 2025 headline: “The purpose of Memorial Day.” The excellent article by Christopher Placek describes how communities “gather to honor fallen heroes” and offer “remembrances of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.” This is in direct opposition to Trump’s view of Memorial Day, as he clearly stated in his Monday speech. The purpose of Trump’s Memorial Day was an opportunity to berate political opponents, shower praise on himself for all he has done for America and the world since February 2025 and lambaste the previous administration in foul and ugly terms.

The families of those fallen servicemen and servicewomen must be so grateful to have heard we have a Commander in Chief who recognizes the sacrifices he alone has made to preserve democracy.
