Girls lacrosse: Barrington falls to New Trier

A dominant season on the field ended with emotional hugs on the sidelines as Barrington fell to New Trier, 16-4, in Tuesday’s supersectional girls lacrosse game at Stevenson High School.

The loss marked the Fillies’ second of the season and capped a 21-win campaign that featured a potent offense and a stifling defense.

Barrington scored at least 10 goals in all but two of its matches heading into Tuesday’s action. The most goals it conceded in a game was eight.

“We had a fantastic season,” coach Addie Dleckmeyer said. “Super proud of the girls and their hard work. I couldn’t have asked for a better season as a coach, and I think the players would probably agree as well.”

New Trier (21-3) snapped those numbers with an eight-goal first quarter and an 11-goal first half. Junior attacker Avery Anderson and senior midfielder Ellie Bornhoeft each notched a hat trick. Lily Rich, Eliana Fuentes, Scarlett Subeck, Riley Nolan, Sonja Keneally, Meg Riley, and Logan Savarie also scored for the Trevians.

“They came out with a lot of poise and they came out prepared,” New Trier coach Pete Collins said. “We talked about playing one play at a time, playing present.”

Barrington played its strongest game in the third quarter, as goalie Peyton Forde collected three saves, holding New Trier to just one goal while attacker Luciana Harmon scored for the Fillies.

“That was when our defense just really locked down and came alive,” Dleckmeyer said. “(New Trier) is absolutely the best team we played this season. I think the first quarter was just a bit of a shell shock for us. We really had to get our bearings and prepare for the speed they were bringing us.”

Harmon joined teammates Elle Kondraros, Avery Ciaglia, and Emma Menke in Barrington’s goal production.

The loss concluded the high school careers of 12 Barrington seniors including three captains. Menke, a junior captain, credited the leadership for the team’s progress and unity this season.

“They were just like big sisters or moms to the whole team,” Menke said. “They always made sure everyone was OK and ready for every game, and all the seniors did that and made sure that people were getting their head in the game and being there for everyone.”

New Trier will play in the state semifinals Thursday night at Hinsdale Central High School.
