Jazz Consortium Big Band celebrates 14 years at Palatine’s Durty Nellie’s June 8

Complementary treats and raffles are in store Sunday, June 8, when the 18-piece Jazz Consortium Big Band celebrates its 14th anniversary at Durty Nellie’s Gastropub and Entertainment Hub, 180 N. Smith St. in Palatine.

The group, which has been bringing Big Band jazz to the Northwest suburbs every month, will be performing from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Cover charge is $10 cash or $5 for age 17 or under.

Jazz Consortium bandleader Roy Vombrack commented, “Looking back, these past 14 years just seemed to fly by. We’re so fortunate to have drawn such a steady, supportive audience.”

He continued, “And I want to add a big thank-you to owners Mark and Jim Dolezal for taking a chance back in 2011 and giving us a regular, monthly ‘home’ to share our love of Big Band music with everyone. And a shoutout to the staff for all they do to make Nellie’s a welcoming place over the years, in spite of the pandemic and other challenges.”

With a lineup of five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones and rhythm section, the Jazz Consortium Big Band was founded in 1975 by college music student friends with a love of Big Band music.

The group performed in club and concert venues throughout the Midwest, including the Chicago Jazz Festival. The band members have gone on to prolific professional careers in the studio and on stage with a wide range of entertainers and Big Band icons, including Tony Bennett, Maynard Ferguson, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Diana Ross and Frank Sinatra.
