Elgin’s St. Sophia Church hosts 46th annual Greek Fest

St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Elgin is hosting its 46th annual summer “Greek Fest” on June 6-8. The fest will be open on Friday and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. at the church, 525 Church Road, off Route 31, just north of I-90 in Elgin. Admission is free.

They will be serving authentic Greek delicacies such as gyros, Grecian chicken, souvlaki, spanakopita (spinach pie), pastitsio, saganaki (flaming cheese) and Greek salad. You also can order ice-cold refreshments including Greek beer, Mediterranean wine or a Mai Tai from the Village Squire.

Those who wish to pre-order lunch items for pick-up from the Greek Fest menu on Friday must get in their order before 10 a.m. Friday. Pick-up will be between noon and 3 p.m. Order online via stsophiagreekfest.com.

Unwind at the Greek Kafenio where many traditional sweets such as baklava and loukoumathes can be found. Enjoy a cup of Greek or American coffee and peruse through dozens of Greek desserts and cookie varietals, made by the church’s Ladies Philoptochos Society.

Friday’s entertainment starts with The Hellenic 5, a Greek band, followed by the Brass From the Past playing all the hits. Saturday features Greek music from the Mousiki area by Terran’s Greek Band followed by the popular cover band Jonny Lyons and the Pride. Sunday concludes with Greek music all day, as well as Greek dancing all weekend.

Stop by the “Plaka” Marketplace inside the church hall where you can shop for crafts, jewelry, books, icons, clothing and other treasures.

Buy a raffle ticket for the grand raffle where you can win up to $10,000.
