DuPage County and Fox Valley baseball roundup: Downers Grove North, Hampshire, Burlington Central among regional champions
Trailing 2-1 through the middle innings, Downers Grove North senior Sean Cabaj came through with the game’s biggest hit — a 2-run single in the fifth — to help lift the Trojans to a 3-2 Class 4A regional championship victory over Romeoville Saturday in Yorkville.
Sophomore Colin Doyle pitched a 5-hit complete game, walking 2 and striking out 3, as the top-seeded Trojans (29-7) captured their third consecutive regional title.
Jack Romsey drove in the Trojans’ first run with an RBI single in the second, tying the game at 1-1 before Romeoville (22-15) pushed a run across in the third for a 2-1 lead.
Ross Oros reached base all 3 times with a single and pair of walks, while Brady Schallmoser went 1 for 4 with a double for the Trojans.
JD Cumbee, Oros, and Schallmoser each tallied runs.
With the win, the Trojans advance to Wednesday’s 4 p.m. Lockport sectional semifinals against No. 4 Plainfield North (24-12).
Hampshire 7, Rockton Hononegah 3: Shane Pfeiffer smacked a 2-run home run, Calen Scheider had a triple and 2 RBI, while Nathan Kolder and Wilson Wemhoff each drove in runs during Hampshire’s 7-3 regional championship victory over Rockton Hononegah Saturday at Harlem.
Ahead 2-1 after an inning, the Whip-Purs (28-8) broke the game open with a 5-run second.
Senior Ari Fivelson led the way, going 2 for 4, while Jack Perrone went 1 for 3 with a double. Wemhoff finished 1 for 2 with a pair of stolen bases, and pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout.
Scheider picked up the win, allowing 4 hits in 6 innings, while walking 1 and fanning 4.
Top-seeded Hampshire advances to Wednesday’s 2 p.m. McHenry sectional semifinals against No. 2 Barrington (24-11).
Barrington 3, Dundee-Crown 2: Joey Tomczak’s walk-off RBI single capped a 3-run seventh inning as Barrington (24-11) rallied to a 3-2 victory over Dundee-Crown at the Grant regional championship in Fox Lake.
The fifth-seeded Chargers (14-21) gave the Broncos all they could handle, holding them scoreless through the first 6 innings behind senior starting pitcher Hayden DeMarsh (6 2/3 IP, 3 hits, 2 BB, 2 Ks).
Dundee-Crown snapped the scoreless deadlock with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, as Ryan Pierce delivered an RBI single, while Logan Gutierrez scored a run.
Trailing 2-0 with 3 outs remaining, Barrington staged its comeback.
Jackson Roberts delivered a 2-run triple to tie the game at 2-2, setting the stage for Tomczak’s late-inning heroics.
Zack Ostergaaurd went 1 for 2 with a pair of stolen bases for the Broncos, who advance to Wednesday’s McHenry sectional semifinals against Hampshire (28-8).
Dylan Ignacek picked up the win in relief of starter Will Renshaw, who worked 6 1/3 innings of 1-hit ball with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.
Burlington Central 7, Rockford Boylan 2: Sophomore Liam Schultz went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI while hitting his second home run in as many postseason games, lifting top-seeded Burlington Central (20-16) to a 7-2 Class 3A regional title triumph over Rockford Boylan Saturday at Rocket Hill.
Zane Pollack had a pair of hits and 2 RBI in support of junior winning pitcher Tyler Kotwica (5 IP, 3H, 2R, 7K).
Senior Gavin Bramer closed it out with a pair of scoreless innings for the Rockets, who captured their third straight regional title.
Burlington Central advances to Wednesday’s 4:30 p.m. Kaneland sectional semifinals against Benet Academy.
Huntley 8, DeKalb 4: The 3rd-seeded Red Raiders (21-15) rallied from a 4-3 deficit with 3 runs in the sixth before adding 2 more runs in the seventh during Saturday’s 8-4 regional championship triumph over No. 2 DeKalb (25-11) at Rockford Guilford.
While defeating the Barbs for the fourth straight time, Huntley captured its ninth consecutive regional title.
Huntley advances to Wednesday’s 4:30 p.m. McHenry sectional semifinals against the top-seeded Warriors.
Glenbard West 9, Glenbard East 8: The 13th-seeded Hilltoppers (18-18) fought off a late comeback to edge No. 6 Glenbard East, 9-8, in Saturday’s Class 4A regional championship clash at Village Green.
With the win, Glenbard West advances to Wednesday’s 4:30 p.m. Willowbrook sectional semifinals against No. 2 York.
The Upstate Eight East champion Rams finished their season at 24-9.
St. Francis 7, Montini 1: The Chicago Catholic White champion Spartans (25-9) earned their fourth Class 3A regional championship in 5 seasons with Saturday’s 7-1 triumph over No. 5 Montini (21-16) in Wheaton.
The top-seeded Spartans finished with 9 hits, while limiting the Broncos to 6 hits.
St. Francis advances to Wednesday’s 2 p.m. Kaneland sectional semifinals against Dixon (14-15).
Lemont 6, Hinsdale South 1: Zane Schneider went 3 for 4 with a double, RBI, and 2 runs scored, while Shea Glotzbach pitched 5 innings of 1-run ball to lift Lemont (29-7) to a 6-1 Class 3A regional title win over Hinsdale South (12-23) Saturday in Darien.
