Lombard celebrates Prairie Place Park

Lombard village and park district leaders have unveiled Prairie Place Park, a new spot for pickleball fans that also is designed to provide stormwater benefits.

The village in 2020 acquired the property at 641 N. Main St. The site now features three outdoor pickleball courts, a new parking lot and sidewalks in addition to a stormwater detention basin capable of storing 2.8 million gallons.

“This project demonstrates how collaboration between local agencies can result in thoughtful, long-term improvements for the community,” said Village President Anthony Puccio in a statement. “Prairie Place Park strengthens our flood protection efforts and provides a welcoming space for residents to gather and stay active.”

The village led the construction of the amenities. The park district will assume long-term responsibility for maintaining the recreational elements and surrounding park grounds, under a 50-year agreement that renews automatically.

According to park board President Greg Ludwig, the additional outdoor pickleball courts brings the total to 10 throughout the district.
