Man faces 31 years to life for shooting pregnant woman in Willowbrook

A Chicago man on Friday was found guilty of shooting a woman in 2022, officials said.

Lawrence Grant, 41, was found guilty of one count of attempted murder, one count of aggravated battery with a firearm and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Grant went after the woman, who was eight months pregnant, after she repeatedly declined his advances inside a Whole Foods on the 6300 block of Route 83, Willowbrook, on Jan. 28, 2022, according to a news release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.

After fighting with the victims’ boyfriend, the woman fled the scene in her own vehicle. Grant followed the woman in his vehicle and shot at her, striking the vehicle several times and shooting the victim in her back, causing the woman’s vehicle to crash, the release said.

Willowbrook Police responded to the crash; the woman was taken to a hospital, where the baby was delivered and the woman had surgery for her gunshot wound. The baby and mother survived and subsequently recovered, the release stated.

Grant was later found at the University of Chicago Hospital, and his vehicle was found torched about a block away from the hospital, officials said. Grant was taken into custody after his discharge from the hospital.

Grant is scheduled to appear in court on June 20. He faces 31 years to life in prison.
