Arlington Heights spending $3.5 million to rebuild roads this summer

Arlington Heights will spend $3.5 million to rebuild deteriorated roads throughout town this summer.

The roadwork, approved in a contract with Huntley-based Schroeder Asphalt Services by the village board Monday night, consists of six street segments totaling 1.62 miles.

It’ll be a full-depth asphalt reconstruction since the roadways are experiencing foundational failures and no longer are suitable for maintenance such as patching or resurfacing, village officials said.

That means tearing up and removing the current street surface, performing earthwork, installing a granular subbase, then spreading out a hot-mix asphalt binder. Along the way, work crews also will fix some sidewalks, replace driveway pavement, reconstruct or adjust drainage structures, and plant new grass, according to the village’s project description.

The new roads primarily are in two areas on the north and south side of towns.

That includes the residential neighborhood just south of Rand-Berkley Park and Chicago Futabakai Japanese School. Streets being rebuilt include:

• Waverly Road, from Chestnut Avenue to Arlington Heights Road;

• Evergreen Avenue, from Appletree Lane to Waverly Drive; and

• Brookwood Drive, from Waverly Road to Evergreen Avenue, plus the Brookwood Court cul-de-sac;

Just a couple blocks to the north of that neighborhood, the stretch of Kennicott Road from Hintz Road to University Drive will be reconstructed.

Then on the other side of town just south of Northwest Community Hospital, Fernandez Avenue from Central Road to White Oak Street will be redone.

In addition, Fernandez and Kennicott Road are key north-south bike routes in the village’s bicycle and pedestrian plan, so there will be additional pavement markings on those streets to delineate combined bicycle-parking lanes. New on-street bike route signage will be put up, too, officials say.

Work is expected to begin in June and be complete by October, weather permitting.
