Porch fire Monday morning displaces nine in Elgin
Nine residents of a house in Elgin had to be relocated after a fire early Monday morning.
According to a press release from the Elgin Fire Department, firefighters responded to a house on the 300 block of Seneca Street just after 4 a.m. on May 19 to find heavy fire on the porch.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the porch and extinguish it quickly, but the interior of the home suffered smoke damage.
One person was checked by paramedics on the scene and released.
Fire department investigators believe the fire was accidental, caused by discarded smoking materials left on the front porch. The estimated damage to the property is about $25,000.
