Boys lacrosse: Barrington earns repeat win and repeat MSL championship

It had been a week since Hersey and Barrington had last met in boys lacrosse, with the visiting Broncos having prevailed.

Unfortunately for Hersey, it had to endure a similar result. Barrington won again 15-7 to earn its second straight MSL crown.

“We had several guys who scored, some young guys and some seniors, so it was good,” Barrington coach Brian Niven said. “Hersey has a good squad this year. Good luck to them in the playoffs, and we go from there.”

The Broncos (14-4) led from start to finish. They were paced by attackers Jack Fischel, Oliver Rosenzweig and Luke Tarpey along with senior middie Aydan Weiszhar. They combined for 14 of those goals as the Broncos established control less than two and a half minutes in when Fischel, a 6-foot-3 senior, found Weiszhar for the first of his two scores on the evening.

The roles became reversed when Weiszhar found Fischel for the first of his three tallies at the 5:50 mark of the opening quarter for a 2-0 Barrington advantage.

After a score from sophomore attacker Luke Tarpey, Rosenzweig, a junior attacker, then made a successful lunge in snaring a Huskies pass and promptly turned into the first of his three goals and a 4-0 Broncos lead.

Following Hersey's first score by freshman Logan Campion, Rosenzweig tallied for the second time, giving the visitors a 5-1 lead entering the second period. They continued their dominance with another quartet of goals that gave them a 9-1 lead at halftime.

Weiszhar's second and Rosenzweig's third goals got the scoring started, followed by Fischel's second and third tallies.

After a goal by senior middie Matt Kania, Tarpey added a pair of goals around scores by Hersey seniors Iosif Prosiliakos and Jake Guerard that had Barrington up 12-3 into the final quarter. After Tarpey's fourth goal, the home team closed the gap as attackers August Sawicki, Zach Brautigam joined Guerard scored before Weiszhar tallied for third time at the 4:17 mark followed by Fischel's fourth with 1:34 left.

Sawicki's second tally for Hersey closed the scoring with 64 seconds remaining.

Weiszhar, an Alabama-Huntsville recruit, praised his squad's work ethic.

“We go to practice every day (wanting) to work. Everyone does their job on the field and it shows in the game (and) on the scoreboard. We've got a long way to go. We're not done yet,” Weiszhar said.

Hersey, a No. 5 seed in the St. Viator sectional, hosts No. 12 Palatine on Friday afternoon.
