Truth or consequences involving tariffs
Diametric to the Placebo Effect is the Nocebo Effect. The Nocebo Effect is when we anticipate that adverse outcomes will stem from an event we initially thought was going to be positive.
The Placebo Effect is about positive recovery expectations, mind over matter. We usually apply this result to the health field and the healing process. However, in truth, it’s designed to have no therapeutic effect.
But, what if we applied a reaction to its evil twin, the Nocebo Effect. Our tariff controversy would be a natural response to this challenge.
We are told that tariffs will invigorate and rebalance the economy. History tells us a different story. We’re a cyclical society and in that vein, being that past just might be prologue, tariffs haven’t always worked. Negotiations ultimately resolve the crisis, both parties simultaneously blink and a joint agreement to cut tariffs follows. And, the market recovers.
To be clear, we don’t know what the future holds. However, in the interim, let’s not suffer unnecessarily. It’s important to find ways to avoid consequences resulting from either the Placebo or Nocebo Effects.
To do so, we should limit our exposure to the negative media coverage that surrounds the disheartening and sensational daily news stories. Then, the final step would be to attach ourselves to a more positive-thinking circle of friends who both respect and engender human dignity, social justice and workers’ rights.
