Shaw likely to rejoin Cubs in Miami
Third baseman Matt Shaw is expected to rejoin the Cubs on Monday in Miami, though manager Craig Counsell stopped short of making it official after Sunday's win over the White Sox.
“It's under consideration, for sure,” Counsell said.
Shaw was scratched from the Iowa Cubs lineup on Sunday, which was the first clue. The unfortunate consequence of calling up Shaw is a roster spot has to be cleared.
Naperville native Nicky Lopez hugged several teammates and staff members in the clubhouse, which probably confirms the inevitable. He's the most likely player to be released when Shaw comes back.
Shaw began the season as the Cubs' starting third baseman, hit .172 in 18 games and was sent to Iowa to work on mechanics. He found a groove recently, belting 4 home runs in a span of two games on Thursday and Friday. He's hit .362 since April 26.
Another reason to make the move now is Jon Berti has hit just .071 this month. Vidal Brujan did have a nice day as Sunday's starting third baseman. He went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Lopez is the best fielder of the four options at third base.
