DuPage County and Fox Valley softball notes: South Elgin streaking; Addison Trail ends skid against Downers Grove South
The wins keep piling up for the South Elgin softball team.
Coach Brad Reynard’s squad started the week winners of 11 straight and 16 of its last 17 to sit at 21-4 overall and a perfect 13-0 in Upstate Eight action.
Key reasons for the hot streak include Anna Kiel (.550 hitting, 18 RBI, 10-3, 0.81 ERA, 118 K in 69 innings), Chloe Ricard (.417 hitting, 10 doubles, 2 homers, 18 RBI), Addison Tinnerella (.431 hitting, 11 RBI, 25 runs), Emma Bell (.421, 32 hits, 18 RBI) and Jenna Sheehan (.405, 8 doubles, 6 triples, 28 RBI, 5-1 with 64 K in 47 innings). “Anna and Jenna have been doing great both at the dish and in the circle and Chole offensively has been awesome and is great working with our staff,” Reynard said.
Addison Trail update: The Blazers defeated West Suburban Gold foe Downers Grove South 6-5, their first win over the Mustangs in 20 years. Erin Parker (.477 hitting, 30 steals) and Nina Matthews (7 homers, 28 RBI) lead the way for AT (13-10, 5-2 WSC Gold to start the week).
Aurora Central Catholic update: Morgan Vaghy (.452 hitting, 38 hits, 25 runs, 20 RBI) and Jessica Pleckham (.468, 36 hits) started the week riding a pair of 9-game hitting streaks. The Chargers (21-8, 8-4 Girls Catholic Athletic White with key recent wins over De La Salle and IC Catholic Prep) also are powered by Corina Miller (14-2, 1.80 ERA, 102 K in 112 2/3 innings, 4-1, 1.31 ERA over last 5 starts) and Kate Gambro (.370, 38 hits, 3 homers, 35 RBI, 15 steals).
Bartlett update: Christina Stankus (10-8, 116 K in 107 innings, .397 hitting, 4 homers, 21 RBI, 24 steals) recently passed the 500 strikeout mark for her Bartlett career. Hannah Phillips (.453 hitting), Suzie Piaskowski (.388, 4 homers, 24 RBI), Emma Engels (.362, 3 homers, 17 RBI, 23 runs) and Addie Moore (.333, 16 RBI) also have helped the Hawks (13-9, 11-4 Upstate Eight), who had a recent big league win over Riverside-Brookfield.
Burlington Central update: Allie Botkin (.366), Mei Shirakowa (.366), Isabelle Reed (129 K in 74 1/3 innings, 18 walks, 1.70 ERA) have stood out for the Rockets (13-16, 9-7 Fox Valley), who lost 1-0 to Prairie Ridge and McHenry recently. Kendall Glonek has caught 90% of Central’s innings.
Cary-Grove update: Trojans coach Cara Neff noted leadoff hitter and center fielder Aubrey Lonergan is having “an incredible season,” hitting .462 (37 hits) with a .506 on-base percentage while covering real estate and displaying a “cannon of an arm” in the outfield. Paityn Ahlquist is hitting .409 for Cary-Grove (7-16 overall).
Crystal Lake South update: Freshman Riley Barda has been a key offensive force for the Gators (1-20, 0-15 Fox Valley). Coach Sara Markelonis also likes how Hazel Hook has helped the team behind the plate. South has no seniors. “We may be young, but we are always determined,” Markelonis said. “It’s very much been a rewarding season with how amazing this team is.”
Elgin update: Grace Tetrev (.472 hitting) and Abby Motolo (.370 hitting) have been bright spots for the Maroons (4-18, 4-10 Upstate Eight). Tretrev leads off and patrols center field, while Motolo hits third and stars behind the plate.
Dundee-Crown update: Jordyn Jeffs has hit 6 homers (.434 hitting), while Alyssa Gale has a team-high 34 hits and 15 steals for the Chargers (8-18, 2-13 Fox Valley). Coach Matt Goetz also has been impressed by the recent play of freshman Kerrigan Svec and Abby Hsu.
Fenton update: For the first time in coach Dave Mello’s 18 seasons, Fenton (13-17, 5-10 Upstate Eight) downed Glenbard South recently thanks to a game-ending homer by freshman Isabella Delgado. Sophia Hollis (.472 hitting, .515 on-base), 42 hits, 12 doubles, 3 triples) and Elizabeth Delgado (5 triples, 28 RBI, 39 runs scored) also have been key. Isabella Delgado is hitting .375 in May, while fanning 19 in 15 1/3 innings in the circle. Senior Kendall Mitchell tis hitting .350 this month with 4 doubles and 4 RBI and playing a good first base.
Glenbard East: The Rams (17-4, 12-3) have been led by Lilly Carver, who hit .583 (.615 on-base) with 3 homers, 4 singles and 4 RBI in a 3-game sample, while standout pitcher Claire Bolda fanned 11 against South Elgin and 12 against Glenbard West in a combined 14 innings. Coach Dawn Chantos also praised the defensive work of Missy Saldana at third (.483 hitting) and Ally Amrhein (.476 hitting) behind the plate.
Glenbard North update: The Panthers (16-5, 6-4 DuKane) have hit 48 homers in 21 games, led by senior Tru Medina (.577, 14 homers, 36 RBI, 10 doubles). Junior Gia Whelan has 8 homers and 30 RBI and is hitting .371, while junior centerfielder Lauren Kozlovsky is hitting .365 with 6 homers, 20 RBI and 9 walks from the leadoff spot. Junior pitcher Avery Miller is hitting .426 with 6 homers and 21 RBI. Freshman second baseman Aubry Miller hit 3 homers and had 7 RBI in a recent game, while seniors Kylee Sisco and Alyssa Abderhalden were on a pair of 5-game on-base streaks recently.
Glenbard South update: Evangeline Dupuis (.457 hitting, .531 on-base, 28 RBI) leads the way for the Raiders (9-15, 9-7 Upstate Eight).
Glenbard West update: The Hilltoppers started week’s play in first place in the West Suburban Silver (16-5, 7-1) thanks to power hitters Ainslie Bobroff (.500 hitting, 11 homers, 31 RBI) and Megan Stieglitz (.471, 8 homers, 29 RBI) and the recent first-base play of Emma Eltzroth, who coach Mary McGrane noted has played been a solid, consistent performer there while proving to be a threat with the stick as well.
Hampshire update: Bria Riebel is leading the Whips in all offensive categories, while Mia Robinson has 8 homers and 44 RBI, while playing a crucial role in the field, skipper Jeremy Bauer explained. Addi Edlen is hitting .433 with 42 RBI for Hampshire (18-9, 9-6 Fox Valley).
Harvest Christian Academy update: Makayla Richards had a double and a homer in a win over Wheeling. She’s hitting .500 with 15 extra-base hits (4 homers) for the Lions (10-12, 4-2 Northeast Athletic). Kenzie Weidman has 43 RBI, while freshman Haley Miller, sophomore Alayna Booras and senior Ella Schoenberg also have performed well.
Huntley update: The Red Raiders (19-12, 11-4 Fox Valley) started the week ranked 19th in Class 4A by the ICA and 23rd in 4A by Max Preps. Coach Mark Petryniec noted Isabella Boskey is hitting .494 against one of the best schedules in the state.
IC Catholic Prep update: Ari Zito (.490 hitting, 47 hits, 44 runs, 31 steals), Sofia Bucaro (.489 hitting, 38 steals, 40 runs, Kelly Cahill (34 RBI, 12 doubles, 4 triples) and Lexi Russ (.448, 53 RBI, 30 runs) have been offensive stalwarts for ICCP (16-12, 7-5 Girls Catholic Athletic White).
Lake Park update: Ari O’Connell is hitting .474 with 9 homers and 32 RBI for the Lancers (16-5, 6-3 DuKane), who also benefit from the play of Gaetana Calo (.449) and pitcher Gianna Furlano (28 K in 19 innings, 1 earned run last week).
Larkin update: The Royals (12-14, 8-7 Upstate Eight) are led by Mya Bermudez (.460 hitting), Julissa Aguinaga (.416), sophomore Ali Herrick (.373), while Mackenzie Wemken has 114 strikeouts pitching.
Metea Valley update: Maielle Ernser (.452 hitting, 33 hits, 7 doubles, 11 RBI, 16 runs) and Charlie Benesh (.429, 5 homers, 99 K in 73 2/3 innings) are having strong seasons for the Mustangs (5-17, 2-8 DuPage Valley).
Naperville North update: Ava Matthews recently threw a no-hitter for the Huskies (8-17, 6-4 DuPage Valley). Sarah Rossi (.346, 11 RBI, 21 runs, 23 steals), Reese Pedersen (.329, 19 RBI), Maddi Larsen (.364 the last 2 week) and Gabi Chmiel (5-0, 47 K, 2.84 ERA, 13 walks) also have been notable for coach Jerry Kedziora, who noted the annual DVC Cares event at Aurora University takes place Friday where all 6 varsity teams in the loop will play for a good cause.
Neuqua Valley update: The Wildcats (12-14, 8-3 DuPage Valley) are bolstered by Ava Drehs (200 K, 1.70 ERA), Krista Waldusky (.432, 23 RBI), Nalia Clifford (.425, 21 RBI, 9 doubles, 28 runs) and Tegan Spellerberg (.349, 5 triples, 26 runs). Clifford also has helped Neuqua defensively, coach Dani Asquini said.
St. Charles East update: The Saints defeated Wheaton North and Glenbard North recently to make the DuKane Conference race even crazier. Hayden Sujack (.467 hitting, 9 homers, 6 doubles, 33 RBI, 30 runs) and Addison Wolf (.458, 38 hits, 15 homers, 8 doubles, 40 RBI) have terrorized defenses for the Saints (16-13, 5-5 DuKane). East is 10-3 since snapping a 5-game losing streak on April 28.
St. Francis update: The Spartans (18-4, 7-3 Girls Catholic Athletic White) play DeLaSalle Saturday for the conference title with Lauren Kennedy (.475 hitting, 30 runs), Alyssa Freeman (.508, 28 RBI), Maggie Stewart (.477, 30 RBI, 11-4 pitching) and Lilly Konen (.428, 35 RBI) tearing it up in the first four batting spots.
St. Charles North update: The North Stars started the week in first place in the DuKane Conference at 7-2 (17-5 overall) and recently beat defending Class 3A champion Pontiac. Ella Heimbuch (.439, 15 steals), Jordyn McBride (.857 slugging, 1.348 OPS), Abby Zawadzki (7 homers, 24 RBI) and Paige Murray (9-2. 93 K in 89 1/3 innings, 16 walks, .223 opponent average) lead the way, while Mack Patterson has returned from a finger injury, coach Tom Poulin noted.
Timothy Christian update: The Trojans (12-6, 7-5 Chicagoland Christian) have 4 players hitting over .450, led by Lauren Kottke (.510) and Sophia Mook (.508). Maci Woerner has been important in the circle for Timothy, which recently beat IC Catholic Prep for the first time in some time, coach Lindsay Slovey noted.
West Chicago update: The Wildcats defeated Glenbard East 2-0 in a battle of top Upstate Eight teams recently. WeGo (16-10, 12-3 Upstate Eight) had 7 hits, Sophia Ptak (7 homers, 42 hits, 28 runs from leadoff position) hit a solo homer and Jasmyn Trigueros (107 K, 439 in her career, 2 strikeouts at the plate in 75 appearances, .400) allowed only 4 hits to pick up the win. Coach Mary Kate Dieter also lauded Sam Mueller’s efforts in a win against Antioch, sophomore Brielle Borner (.431, 16 RBI, 4 homers, 21 runs) and Tessa Banasiak (.324, 27 RBI, 5 homers).
Wheaton North update: Reagan Crosthwaite (.475, .570 on-base, 14 homers, 38 RBI, 38 runs) and pitcher Hannah Wulf (12-2, 104 K, 16 walks, 1.12 ERA and .158 opponent average) continue to play well for the Falcons (19-6, 7-3 in the volatile DuKane Conference).
Wheaton Warrenville South update: Coach Jeff Pawlak is high on the play of pitcher Presley Wright, Becca Chaney (game-winning hit against Wheaton North), Caroline Schulz in left field (who combined with Chaney’s relay throw to gun a Wheaton North runner out at the plate), and leadoff hitter Abby Mease who he noted has robbed a couple home runs and has thrown multiple runners out at the plate for the Tigers (16-7, 6-3 DuKane).
York update: Sara Steinecker’s homer over the fence in center gave the Dukes a win against Oak Park-River Forest to move them to 16-10 (4-4 West Suburban Silver). Avery Kanouse threw 6 2/3 innings in the game, while Taylor McMillen closed it out. Kanouse and Gia Valentin also hit a homer. Kanouse went over the 500-career strikeout barrier recently and now holds the program all-time mark. Maggie Demopoulos leads the Silver in steals with 16, while Lilly Burda is hitting a team-best .418.
