Foreign nations, don’t blame all Americans

An open letter to nations around the world who have been allies of the United States:

I am writing to you as I watch in shock and horror the regime of Donald Trump disassemble our government, tank our economy, ignore our civil rights, flout our laws and drive away our allies. The gleeful levying of tariffs, threats of snatching foreign lands and indiscriminate ousting of immigrants legally here are the acts of a petulant, wannabe dictator.

Please know that most of us Americans are as upset by all of this as you are, even some of us who voted for him.

While we are getting over the shock of these first months of Trump’s regime, coming to our senses, organizing resistance and preparing to defend our democracy against this tyranny, we are very aware of the black eye our president is giving our country around the world.

Many of you have held our country in high esteem, joined us in fighting tyranny in countries around the world and welcomed us as we visited your countries. We appreciate your past friendship and support and hope you will not give up on us as we brace ourselves for the difficult times ahead.

We have watched years of diplomacy and good will evaporate with the stroke of a pen. We are trying to stay hopeful and humbly ask that you remember the good times. Don’t abandon us in our time of need.

Respectfully, An American Patriot
