Man detained after hitting garage in police chase in Elmhurst
A man who crashed a car into the garage of an Elmhurst house while driving away from police will be detained pretrial.
DuPage County Judge Demetrios Panoushis made the ruling on Saturday for Arthur Turner, 38, of the 400 block of North St. Louis Avenue, Chicago.
Turner is charged with burglary, retail theft, aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer and aggravated battery.
According to a press release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office, he also is wanted on a Winnebago County warrant in an armed robbery case.
Co-defendants, Owin Turner, 54, of the 2400 block of Galilee Avenue, Zion, and Thomas White, 55, of the 4700 block of West Gladys Avenue, Chicago, are each charged with burglary and retail theft. They were not detained pretrial.
The press release said that around 7:52 a.m. Friday, Villa Park police were called to a Walgreens store at 10 E. St. Charles Road to investigate a theft. The store manager told them three men put diapers and packs of chewing gum, worth about $432.37, in three shopping carts and left without paying.
About 10 minutes later, Villa Park police responded to another Walgreens at 200 E. Roosevelt Road. Store workers told them three men took $891.95 worth of diapers, alcohol and chewing gum.
According to the release, officers found the men near St. Charles and Route 83, and when officers activated their squad cars’ emergency lights and sirens, Arthur Turner sped away, doing 62 mph in a 25 mph zone.
The release said he hit a Ford F-250 pickup truck near Berkley Avenue and Prairie Path Lane in Elmhurst, veered off the road and crashed in an attached garage.
Arthur Turner is accused of spitting on an officer and making threats toward officers.
