Palatine Garden Club to hold perennial sale at farmers market

“ASK ME!!” say the buttons sported by members of the Palatine Garden Club as they host their Annual Perennial Sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on two Saturdays, May 10 and 17, at the Palatine Farmer’s Market, near the Metra station, 137 W. Wood St.

Shoppers will not only find some gorgeous selections, but they’ll also get tips and answers to their plant questions, purchase or not.

There will be quite a variety at the sale: plants for sun, shade, and in-between; natives; and “pollinator magnets” like milkweed and brown-eyed Susan. All plants are perennials, which means they are investments. They come back every year. Because they are dug from members’ own gardens, they survive and thrive in local conditions.

This year, the club was fortunate to obtain a “floral” gift from the garden of the late Jane C. Kern, a Palatine gardener whose family donated some unusual specimens for the sale. Among the well-tended beauties are gorgeous peonies, bleeding hearts, and Lenten roses.

As it approaches its 80th year in the community, the club continues its spirit of giving and beautifying. This sale is members’ only fundraiser; proceeds allow the club to continue its community work and feature speakers at meetings. Information will also be available for anyone who wants to join this lively group of green thumbs.
