Celebrate Lilac Time with guided tours of historic Lilacia Park

Celebrate the beauty and history of Lombard during Lilac Time with a guided walking tour of Lilacia Park, offered by the Lombard Historical Society through May 17.

Explore the rich history and natural beauty of Lilacia Park, one of Lombard’s most treasured landmarks. Nestled in the heart of downtown Lombard, Lilacia Park is home to 1,000 lilacs and 50,000-70,000 tulips, drawing visitors from across the region every May.

“Lilacia Park is one of Lombard’s hidden gems, and our guided tour is the perfect way to dive into its history while enjoying all the beauty it has to offer,” said Alison Costanzo, Executive Director, Lombard Historical Society. “It’s a chance to soak up the stunning blooms, hear fun stories about the park’s past, and see why ‘The Lilac Village’ is such a special place. We can’t wait to share it with you!”

This 8.5-acre botanical gem was designed by Jens Jensen, a leader of the Prairie School of landscape design and one of the most influential landscape architects of the early 20th century. Known for his naturalistic style, Jensen emphasized native plants, organic forms, and peaceful, contemplative spaces — all beautifully reflected in Lilacia Park’s winding paths, council circles, water feature, and open lawns.

Led by knowledgeable historical society guides, the Lilac Heritage Tour offers visitors an opportunity to discover the park’s origins — from Colonel William and Helen Plum’s original lilac collection to its transformation into a public space enjoyed by generations.
