White Sox see promise in strong starts by minor leaguers Elko, Taylor

The White Sox named Class AAA Charlotte Knights infielder Tim Elko and Class AA Birmingham Barons right-hander Grant Taylor as their minor-league players of the month on Friday.

Elko leads Class AAA in slugging percentage and is fourth in batting average. He has recorded a hit in 21 of Charlotte’s 25 games, including a stretch of 10 games in which he hit 8 home runs.

“That was a pretty cool feeling,” Elko said of his home run streak. “Being able to help us put runs on the board and win games feels even better.”

Taylor, meanwhile, has thrown 6⅓ straight scoreless innings and has not allowed a run in three starts on the road. The right-handed hurler says a recent addition to his arsenal has been key to his success.

“My cutter’s been huge in the last couple of outings,” Taylor said. “I’ve been able to use it early and late in the count. I feel like it’s been a good weapon for me so far.”

Taylor also has not allowed a run on the road this season, with nine strikeouts in nine innings of work in away games. His success has come through more confidence in himself even in the face of stiff competition.

“Double-A hitters are better. They’re just better, so you get away with a lot less,” Taylor said. “Better competition always brings out more in you. The Double-A hitters hold me a little bit more honest.”

As for Elko, his hot hitting has many media members asking if he’s been thinking about a potential call-up to the majors. But the first baseman is doing his best to stay locked in on his current team.

“Whenever that opportunity (to play for the White Sox) arises, I’ll be ready, but right now I’m just staying focused on where my feet are,” Elko said. “I’m just trying to improve every single day and be the best I can for the Charlotte Knights right now.”
