Honoring our lifeline: Du-Comm celebrates National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week
Every second counts in an emergency, and behind every call for help stands a dedicated team of 9-1-1 Telecommunicators. Each day, millions of people depend on the skill, expertise and commitment of those who work in public safety telecommunications.
These unsung heroes work tirelessly around the clock responding to calls for assistance, dispatching police, fire and emergency medical service professionals while providing integral instruction and support to people in distress.
On April 13-19, Du-Comm will celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, recognizing the dedication, skill and professionalism of emergency telecommunicators.
Introduced to the United States Congress by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials International in 1991, National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is the second full week of April each year.
Telecommunicators are the first contact citizens have during an emergency and the crucial link in getting police officers, fire fighters and paramedics to the proper location.
Du-Comm is the largest consolidated 9-1-1 Public Safety Communications Center in the state of Illinois. Formed in 1975 to provide interoperable emergency communications services to several police, fire and emergency medical departments, 2025 marks Du-Comm’s 50th anniversary. It today serves 45 agencies with a combined population of over 920,000 citizens. Du-Comm’s telecommunicators processed over 1 million phone calls in 2024.
