19 community leaders nominated for YWCA Elgin Leader Luncheon awards

The YWCA Elgin has announced the nominees for its 41st annual Leader Luncheon on Thursday, May 8. Hundreds of community leaders, business representatives and volunteers attend this time-honored tradition of celebrating Elgin area women leaders. Elisa Lara, a registered nurse with the Visiting Nurses Association Health Care, is serving as the honorary chair.

It will begin with a reception at 11 a.m. and luncheon at noon at The Seville in Streamwood. The luncheon is supported by title sponsor, The Schrieber Group of Elgin. Reservations are $60 for YWCA members or $65 for nonmembers.

A special tribute will be presented at the Leader Luncheon for the late Rise’ Jones, founder of the Elgin nonprofit Hamilton Wings and longtime supporter of the YWCA Elgin.

The following 19 women leaders have been nominated by their colleagues and peers in eight award categories:

• Margaret Hillis Award for the Arts: Cynthia G. Hernandez (Ballet Folklórico Huehuecoatl) nominated by Jo Ann Armenta; Carole Medal (Gail Borden Public Library) nominated by Miriam A. Lytle; and Jess Rocha (Side Street Studio Arts) nominated by Tanner Melvin.

• Beatrice Dorsey Award for Business & Professions: Rachel P. Baer, MD FACS CGRA (Advocate Sherman Hospital) nominated by Joan Kanute; Joan Kanute (Advocate Sherman Hospital) nominated by Twila M. Williams; Yaneth Medina (St. Charles Bank & Trust) nominated by George Santiago; Dr. Magdalena Perez (Elgin Hispanic Network & Luna Behavioral Group) nominated by Rafael Villagomez; and Brenda Sandoval (Compass Staffing Solutions) nominated by Maria de los Angeles.

• Marguerite Henry Award for Communications & Technology: Erin Sauder (Explore Elgin Area) nominated by Krisilee Murphy.

• Harriet Gifford & Hattie Griffin Award for Education: Dr. Annette Acevedo (School District U-46) nominated by Dr. Suzanne Johnson; Nancy Coleman (Alignment Collaborative for Education) nominated by Leslie Wolko; and Noelle Dulabaum-Bohrer (Washington Elementary School) nominated by Ryan Corcoran.

• Myrtle Spiegler Gerberding Award for Public Service: Detective Shelley Mendiola (Elgin Police Department) nominated by Police Chief Ana Lalley; and Patricia Piper Golden (Retired Judge & AAUW) nominated by Elgin Area — American Association of University Women.

• Betty Brown Award for Racial Justice: Elizabeth (Liddy) Hope, Ph.D (Elgin Community College) nominated by Elgin Community College; and Sandra Y. Parga (Kane County 16th Circuit Judge) nominated by Helen Strom.

• Marie Grolich Award for Social Services: Noelle Dulabaum-Bohrer (Washington Elementary School) nominated by Ryan Corcoran, and Donna Kruse (Advocate Sherman Hospital) nominated by Susan Morby.

• Marjorie Leonard Award for Volunteer & Community Service: Christy Schmidt (Elgin Police Department) nominated by ELLAS — Elgin Latino Leadership Alliance for Seniors.
