More construction on Route 20 in Elgin expected to begin Monday
Drivers on U.S. Route 20 in Elgin will have another construction project to contend with starting Monday.
The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to begin repair work on the bridge that carries Route 20 over St. Charles and Liberty streets and Poplar Creek on Monday, March 17, weather permitting.
IDOT says the work will initially require daily lane closures on Route 20 from east of Grace Street to west of Shales Parkway/Bluff City Boulevard.
In early spring, Route 20 will be reduced to at least one lane in each direction in the work zone. The public also should expect various lane shifts on both sides of Route 20 approaching the bridge.
Drivers are already dealing with lane closures on the west side of the Fox River on 20 at Route 31.
The $27.4 million project will consist of replacing the existing bridge decks, expansion joints and structural steel, resurfacing, and installing new lighting, storm sewers and noise barriers. The work is anticipated to be completed late in 2025.
IDOT says drivers can expect delays and encourages alternative routes.
