Lee W. Eysturlid: 2025 candidate for Geneva City Council Ward 3

Bio

Office Sought: Geneva City Council Ward 3

City: Geneva

Age: 58

Occupation: Teacher

Previous offices held: None

What is the most serious issue your community will face in the coming years and how should the city council respond to it?

How to handle the dual issue of development and honoring the nature of the community. Geneva is a historically rich place, a “home town.” Therefore it faces the often sensitive issue of how to juggle new building with preservation.

How would you describe the state of your community's finances? What should be the top priorities for spending during the next few years? Are there areas of spending that need to be curtailed?

Since I am not privy to much of this detail I am not sure. I would like to believe that prior alderman have been good stewards of our money. I would endeavor to do the same. I think the watchword would be thoughtful frugality.

What do you see as the most important infrastructure project the community must address? Why and how should it be paid for? Conversely, during these uncertain economic times, what project(s) can be put on the back burner?

Concern for the state of roads, water and sewer lines, and access to power. This is especially a concern for the east side. Much of the infrastructure is outdated or worn out. The east side generally comes in second, versus “downtown,” and that has to be addressed.

Describe your experience working in a group setting to determine policy. What is your style in such a setting to reach an agreement and manage local government? Explain how you think that will be effective in producing effective actions and decisions with your city council.

My main civic involvement has been with Boy Scouts here in Geneva. I prefer to listen to what every one has to say, to try and learn what I can on the topic we are considering, and then add my opinion (or vote). All that taken it, I will then strive for the best outcome.

What makes you the best candidate for the job?

I am more than willing to say what needs to be said, and ask difficult questions. I am good at that. I am OK with questioning the easy option, and happy to push back. I will look anyone in the face and tell them what I think, and I respect anyone that is honest with me about their opinions. I will do what I honestly think is best for the ward, period.

What’s one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet?

We need to really consider whether or not the whole idea of “TIFs” are effective. There is far too much willingness to accept this device. I would urge a moratorium on them.
