Larry Furnish: 2025 candidate for Geneva City Council Ward 3

Bio

Office Sought: Geneva City Council Ward 3

City: Geneva

Age: 71

Occupation: Retired manufacture rep

Previous offices held: No public office

What is the most serious issue your community will face in the coming years and how should the city council respond to it?

The city infrastructure is in much need of replacing. Continue to involve residents in decision-making processes, particularly regarding infrastructure projects and strategic planning, to ensure that developments align with community needs and preferences.

How would you describe the state of your community's finances? What should be the top priorities for spending during the next few years? Are there areas of spending that need to be curtailed?

Geneva's financial outlook remains strong, characterized by prudent fiscal management, strategic planning, and a dedication to transparency. The city's proactive approach to budgeting and financial reporting ensures that it is well-positioned to meet future challenges and opportunities.

What do you see as the most important infrastructure project the community must address? Why and how should it be paid for? Conversely, during these uncertain economic times, what project(s) can be put on the back burner?

Geneva is actively engaging the community to assess and enhance its infrastructure and public facilities. Recent discussions have highlighted concerns such as flooding at the police station, accessibility issues at city hall, and the need for fire stations that meet current population demands. New bonds will need to be sold. This will be voted on by the people of Geneva.

Describe your experience working in a group setting to determine policy. What is your style in such a setting to reach an agreement and manage local government? Explain how you think that will be effective in producing effective actions and decisions with your city council.

I have lived in Geneva for 35 years. I am passionate about volunteering. I am active with foundations, Geneva Chamber and many other organizations. I interact with people very well. I will continue to work actively seeking and considering input from residents to reflect he community's needs and preferences to make informed decisions.

What makes you the best candidate for the job?

I am the most active candidate in the Third Ward. Thirty-five year resident of the Third Ward. Twenty-year award for volunteering with the Geneva High School girls gymnastics. A board member of the Geneva Academic Foundation for seven years. Founding member of the Becky Furnish Foundation. Volunteer at the Festival of the Vine, Swedish Days, and Christmas Walk in Geneva. 2024 Geneva Chamber Volunteer of the Year. I have interacted with many people in Geneva over my 35 years living in Geneva.

What’s one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet?

Geneva, Illinois, is a vibrant community with a strong commitment to growth and improvement. While many initiatives are underway, one area that could further enhance the community is the development of a Community Resource Hub.
