Elgin library hosts Barbie exhibit with iconic dolls, cultural context

The Gail Borden Library in Elgin will honor the famed fashion doll with the Barbie’s Superstar Era exhibit.

The exhibit begins March 4 and runs through March 31 at the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave. It will feature hundreds of iconic Barbie collector’s dolls from 1979 to the mid-1980s, along with play sets that capture the societal shifts, fashion trends, and cultural movements of the time.

In addition to collectors’ items, visitors will be able to step into the world of Barbie with larger-than-life photo ops, dress-up opportunities, interactive elements and more. The exhibit will feature trailblazing and representative dolls, including Black Barbie, Hispanic Barbie, and Great Shape Barbie. Accompanying Barbie programs for all ages will take place throughout the month.
