Gurnee family allowed to return to home after roof caught fire late Sunday
No injuries were reported from a house fire late Sunday in Gurnee.
Neighbors reported flames on the roof near the chimney of the two-story, single-family home on the 200 block of Old Grand Avenue just before 9:30 p.m.
Firefighters were able to extinguish most of the blaze from the exterior of the home and used fire extinguishers to put out hot spots in the attic of the house, fire officials said.
Damage was estimated at about $5,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but fire officials believe it was likely sparked by embers from a wood-burning stove falling onto the home’s cedar shingles.
The family was allowed to return to the home about an hour later.
