Demand leadership, not higher taxes
On April 1, Kane County voters will decide on a 0.75% sales tax increase, a proposal that will take $51 million annually from local residents. Supporters claim it’s a small amount and necessary for public safety, but the facts tell a different story.
In the past four years, Kane County’s budget has increased by 88%, growing from $66 million in 2020 to $124 million today. Instead of controlling spending, county leadership is asking taxpayers to foot the bill for years of financial mismanagement. Raising taxes should be a last resort, not the first solution.
While some argue this tax mainly affects visitors, the truth is most retail purchases in Kane County are made by local residents. That means working families, seniors and small businesses will bear the burden. With inflation already straining household budgets, now is not the time to impose new taxes.
Voters deserve transparency and accountability. If public safety is the concern, where has all the additional spending gone? Before increasing taxes, county leaders should answer to taxpayers and identify ways to reduce waste and prioritize essential services.
I urge Kane County residents to vote no on April 1 and send a message that we need responsible leadership, not higher taxes.
