Missed opportunity on women’s sports

On Feb. 5, President Trump signed an Executive Order entitled “Keeping Men out of Women’s Sports.” This topic should have never reached this point, but luckily, we finally have a president with a backbone who is willing to say enough is enough. Polls show that most Americans believe it is wrong for biological men to compete with women in women’s sports or to be in a women’s locker room.

The signing ceremony was a feel-good moment. The president stood with a backdrop of women, mothers, women athletes and young girls in their sports uniforms. For the actual signing, the president invited the young girls (future of women’s sports) to come to the desk to watch. They all rushed up, smiling and intently watched as the president signed the Executive Order. He also handed out pens to some lucky girls. When he held up the order for all to see, surrounded by the girls and women it became one of best presidential photos I have ever seen.

Unfortunately, the next day the Herald relegated this event to a dry one paragraph story on Page 2. The Herald missed a wonderful chance to publish a story affecting millions of women. They could have published a story recounting the history of women’s sports, the current state, the future possibilities and why this Executive Order was signed. They could have printed that fantastic photo.

Note to the media: It is OK to write positive stories about President Trump and the people he is serving.

It is not too late for the Herald to follow up with an article or series about women and their participation in sports. I am sure there are many qualified staffers who would jump at the chance to write this story.

Women deserve it.
