Elgin man gets 15 years for shooting at police

An Elgin man was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to shooting at police in 2023.

Odessian T. Torres, 30, was already a convicted felon when he opened fire on Elgin police officers with a 9 mm handgun in September 2023. Prosecutors said it was illegal for him to possess the weapon because of his prior conviction.

He fired seven shots, struck no one, but “severely damaged” a stop sign with three shots, according to prosecutors.

Torres pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm at police officers and was facing up to 60 years in prison if convicted.

He is required to serve 85% of the sentence and is getting credit for 525 days already served in jail.
