Heavy icing closes Route 59 in North Barrington

Drivers traveling through North Barrington were met with delays and detours Tuesday after an emergency closure on Route 59.

Illinois Department of Transportation officials announced late Tuesday afternoon that Route 59/Hough Road is temporarily shut down between Route 22 and Cuba Road.

The problem stems from “a drainage issue, causing heavy icing on the road,” IDOT said. “The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area.”

Traffic was being redirected to Northwest Highway and Route 22. People will still be able to access homes and businesses.

IDOT urged drivers to watch for flaggers and workers in the area, and follow speed limits.

It was not clear Tuesday night how long the closure would last. IDOT officials said they would post updates online when the road reopens. For traffic and road condition updates, visit gettingaroundillinois.com and follow IDOT on Facebook and X.
