Buzelis can’t advance past first round of dunk contest

Bulls rookie Matas Buzelis might have gone a little too strong on degree of difficulty in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

Buzelis couldn't complete his opening dunk and was eliminated in the first round.

Mac McClung, a two-way player for the Orlando Magic, won the dunk contest for the third straight year, beating San Antonio's Stephon Castle in the finals.

McClung got perfect scores on all four attempts and stole the show with his first dunk, when he jumped over a car. Blake Griffin did it first back in the day, but McClung soared over the roof of the car, not just the hood.

For his first dunk, Buzelis tried to pull out a specialty he used in a previous contest. Starting from the basket support, he tried to bounce the ball between his legs, off the floor, then gather the it with one hand and dunk. He couldn't put that one through the hoop, though, in five tries.

He could have opted for a safety dunk on his last attempt, but chose not to. Milwaukee's Andre Jackson Jr. ended up using two safety dunks in the first round.

The second dunk was an alley-oop off the side of the backboard, which Buzelis caught, then soared to the other side of the hoop for an over the head soft slam. He completed this one on a single attempt.

Miami's Tyler Herro won the 3-point contest, edging Golden State's Buddy Hield in the final round. Stevenson High School grad Jalen Brunson didn't advance after scoring an 18 in the first round. Hield's 31 points in the opening round was the best score of the night.
