Call to action

President Trump’s inauguration marked the beginning of a bleak four years for many Americans. I’m not referring to Democrats who feel stunned by Trump’s election victory. I’m talking about the Americans who will bear the brunt of Trump’s agenda, including those who don’t think of themselves as either Democrats or Republicans.

Trump offers no solutions to the cost of living crisis that affects countless families and young people. Policies such as tariffs and mass deportations will lead to inflation and economic disruptions.

Members of our community are already under attack by an administration set on dividing Americans and taking away rights.

The new administration’s purpose for whatever bits of government it doesn’t intend to eviscerate is to benefit Elon Musk and other oligarchs willing to pledge complete allegiance to Trump.

As regular citizens, we have the power to counter much of the harm coming from the federal government over the next four years by acting locally. Our local government, school boards and civic organizations are the first line of defense for many in DuPage County.

Trump’s election eight years ago was the reason I got active in local politics, along with millions of others. Now I find myself leading the Democratic Party of DuPage County and working with a new generation of volunteers who are ready to join the fight for progress.

That is why the Democratic Party of DuPage County will host a Volunteer Expo on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. until noon. Dozens of organizations from across DuPage will have tables to engage community members who are eager to learn how to get involved locally. The Expo will be at the College of DuPage Student Resource Center at 425 Fawell Blvd in Glen Ellyn. Join me to make an impact and be part of the solution.
