Basketball roundup: Fremd boys shake off slow start at New Trier; Prospect girls sweep MSL East

Fremd's overcame a 10-0 deficit at New Trier and got 22 points from junior guard Rafael Pinto and 21 from junior forward Jordan Williams, as the Vikings topped the Trevians 66-56 Tuesday night in Winnetka.

The visitors led 46-37 after three quarters, thanks to Williams' buzzer-beating bucket in the paint. But New Trier (19-8) answered with a 7-0 run and trailed only 46-44 at 5:49 of the fourth quarter.

Consecutive putback baskets by Pinto and Fremd junior guard-forward Tommy Moffett (7 points) highlighted a 9-2 spurt shortly thereafter.

Fremd senior guard Ryan Brown (2 treys) tallied all 12 of his points before intermission. Williams came down with a team-high 9 rebounds.

Fremd (22-2) played without high-scoring senior guard Sam Hirsch, and New Trier standout guard Christopher Kirkpatrick (9 first-quarter points) suffered a severe ankle injury midway through the second quarter, ending his night.

Antioch 52, Grant 47: Antioch (11-12, 7-3) stayed in the race in the Northern Lake County Conference as Mark Render led with 21 points on a trio of three-pointers. Teddi Wetu added 11 points and Jason Lee had 10 points for Antioch, who hosts conference leader Grayslake Central on Friday. Grant fell to 14-8, 7-3.

Naperville North 51, Conant 32: Conant’s trip to Naperville didn’t bear any fruit as the Cougars (11-13) fell. Bradley Biedke led Conant with 11 points while Rohan Patel chipped in 10.

Stevenson 41, Lake Forest 38: Stevenson (17-8, 8-2) remained atop the North Suburban Conference by holding off the Scouts. Rocco Pagliocca led the Patriots with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Aidan Bardic knocked in13 points while Atticus Richmond had 8 points and 9 rebounds.

Evanston 56, Schaumburg 30: Evanston ran past the host Saxons (17-9).

Lakes 53, Round Lake 33: Ben Newcomb (7-15, 4-6) scored 17 points as 9 different Eagles scored. Round Lake (1-20, 0-10) was led by Jaquan Jameson, who had 17 points.

Maine East 85, Elk Grove 65: Brandon Schreiber poured in 28 points, Jayden Dozie had 16 points, Jaiden Whitehead 14 points and Albert Cooper 11 points as Maine East (7-15) prevailed. Novak scored 20 points and Nolan Brand added 16 points for Elk Grove (3-23).

Wauconda 68, Grayslake North 38: Wauconda (8-17, 6-4) was paced by Alex Ortega with 24 points while Nick Ori had 15, Austin Carlsen 11 and Tony Salemi 10 points and 9 rebounds. Uros Mitrovic led Grayslake North (14-11, 6-4) with 24 points.

Girls

Prospect 66, Rolling Meadows 45: Prospect (22-6, 10-0) made it a clean sweep in the MSL East. Zoe Black hit 5 three-pointers to score 21 points while Allison Linke had 18 points and Angelina Falls 8 points to lead the Knights. Meadows (18-8, 7-3) was led by Iris Jordan who scored 9 points and Nell Osterhues with 8 points.

Elk Grove 55, Wheeling 27: Elk Grove (4-25, 2-8) led 33-29 after three quarters and pulled away. Emily Fiorito led the Grens with 14 points, 8 of which came in the fourth quarter. Caroline Hadler chipped in 9 points and Gianna Wright had 8 points. Wheeling (2-27, 0-10) was led by Kate Ning, who had 13 points.

Hersey 54, Buffalo Grove 18: Hersey (17-11, 8-2) wrapped up MSL action with a convincing win, bolting to a 21-4 first quarter lead. The Huskies, who had 12 different players score, were led by Sadie Marks, who had 17 points, followed by Kate Donovan (8 points) and Maddy Drury (7). Buffalo Grove (12-16, 4-6) was led by Hannah Weber, Kayla Daugird and Demi Antonopoulos who each had 4 points.

Glenbrook North 56, Maine West 29: Maine West (8-17) ran into a stout Glenbrook North (20-6) team and fell despite Alyssa Philip and Kaitlyn Nutley each with 10 points.

Libertyville 44, Waukegan 36: Leading 27-17 at the half, Libertyville (22-5, 13-0) went on an 11-2 run to put the game away. Elinor Lindal led the Wildcats with 19 points. Sophia Swanson had 9 points and Madison Sears 7 points.

Lake Zurich 63, Zion Benton 14: Lake Zurich (20-7, 10-3) ran off to a 25-2 lead after one quarter as all 13 Bears scored. Alex Nowk-Tice led Lake Zurich with 12 points while Molly Friesen had 8 points and Avery Cooper 6 points.
