NAMI Kane County North offers free family mental health course

NAMI Kane County North is offering a Family-to-Family Course starting Feb. 22.

It will be offered from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays, from Feb. 22 to April 12, at New Life Community Church, 1580 E. Chicago St. in downtown Elgin.

This is a free, eight-session education program for people who love someone with mental health conditions. It provides information about anxiety, depressive disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions. It can be taken by parents, spouses, adult siblings, adult children, partners or significant others.

It's designed to increase understanding and advocacy skills while helping participants maintain their own well-being.

It is a designated evidenced-based program. Research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to an individual living with a mental health condition. The course is taught by trained family members of people living with mental illness.

Class size is limited and registration is required. The deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 12. To sign up, go to namikcn.org.
