Police: Man broke into South Elgin home, harmed animal

A man accused of breaking into a South Elgin home, harming an animal there and then barricading himself in the basement Thursday remains in custody at a medical facility pending an upcoming court appearance, police said Sunday.

Daniel J. Jenkinson, 28, of downstate Ina, is charged with violating an order of protection with prior convictions, aggravated cruelty to an animal, criminal trespass to a residence and criminal damage to property, according to police.

Authorities say Jenkinson forced his way into a home in the 600 block of Juli Drive at approximately 1 a.m. Thursday. Jenkinson knows the residents of the home, police said.

South Elgin police officers called to the scene received assistance from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the county’s SWAT team. Police said de-escalation tactics enabled SWAT officers to enter the home and take Jenkinson into custody peacefully.

Jenkinson, who police said is on parole for aggravated battery to a peace officer in Kane County, was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Residents took the injured animal to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment, police said.

In addition to the charges, the Illinois Department of Corrections has issued an arrest warrant for Jenkinson alleging a parole violation, police said.
