Man arrested after forcing his way into South Elgin home and barricading himself in basement

A downstate Illinois man was arrested this week in South Elgin after forcing his way into a home, harming an animal and then barricading himself in the basement, authorities said.

According to the South Elgin Police Department, officers responded at about 1 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, to a call on the 600 block of Juli Drive.

Daniel Jenkinson, 28, of Ina, whom the residents of the home know, was barricaded in the basement when police arrived.

The South Elgin officers requested the help of Kane County sheriff’s deputies and SWAT, who managed to de-escalate the situation and take Jenkinson into custody.

Jenkinson, who was out on parole for aggravated battery to a peace officer out of Kane County, was charged with two felony counts of violating an order of protection and felony aggravated cruelty to an animal, as well as misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and damage to property.

The Illinois Department of Corrections subsequently issued an arrest warrant for Jenkinson for violating parole.

Jenkinson, who was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation after his arrest, remains in custody at a secure medical facility pending his next court appearance, authorities say.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing.
